The Eighth Army delayed  the tide of the North Korean invasion of South Korea across the 38th Parallel. With holding actions outside of Osan, primarily made up of members of the 24th Infantry Division, in June of 1950 time was bought for troops to arrive to resist the Communist aggression.

By July 18th, 1950 the 1st Cavalry Division and the 25th Infantry Division arrive in Korea.

The Eighth Army’s defensive perimeter, with ROK troops at the Pusan Perimeter, bought time for a build up of U.S. and United Nations forces.

On Sept 15th at Inchon, the landing of 1st Marine Division and 7th Infantry Division forces (X Corps) relieved the pressure on the Pusan Perimeter and began severing the supply lines of the North Korean invaders.  The capture of Seoul and the 8th Army’s reaching the 38th Parallel began their march north to the border of China.  In August the 2nd Infantry Division joins the Eighth Army, landing in Korea.

On Oct 25th Chinese forces cross the Yalu River and enter the war on the side of the North Koreans, halting the advance of the Eight Army.

In December of 1951 the 45th Infantry Division (The Oklahoma National Guard - Thunderbirds) entered Korea.  Early in 1952 the 40th Infantry Division (the California National Guard - Grizzlies) replaced the 24th Infantry Division, that was returned to Japan.

For the remaining years of the war the US and United Nations Forces fought a brutal war against the Communist Forces, the U.S. applying superior force and the Communist Chinese and North Koreans sacrificing wave after wave of troops along the center of the country.

Combat operations for the Korean War ceased when we entered an armistice in July of 1953.
